Stone dust, shutters and cylinders that stop turning

Cutting and polishing stone fills a yard with fine dust, and it ends up inside every keyway. Why oil makes it worse, what to use instead, and when a yard lock is past cleaning.

Novelda cuts and finishes a great deal of stone. The marble cluster put more than 40 % of Spain’s natural-stone processing firms in the town in 2024. Anyone who has spent a day in one of those yards knows the dust: pale, very fine, and everywhere by the end of the shift. Locks are no exception.

What the dust does inside a lock

A cylinder works because a row of small pins drops into place when the right key goes in. The gaps between them are tiny. Stone dust carried in on keys, blown in by the wind or kicked up by a forklift settles in the keyway and between the pins. For a while the key just feels gritty. Then it needs wiggling. Then one morning it will not turn.

Roller shutter locks and the locks on sliding yard gates suffer most, because they sit low, close to where the dust settles, and get hosed down along with everything else.

Why oil is the wrong answer

The reflex is a squirt of spray oil. It works for a day. After that, oil and stone dust make a paste that sticks the pins far worse than dry dust ever did, and it holds on to every new grain that blows in.

Better:

  • Blow it out first. A short burst of compressed air into the keyway, with the key out.
  • Use a dry lubricant. Graphite powder or a PTFE dry spray made for locks, a little, once.
  • Wipe the key. A dirty key carries dust straight back in every morning.
  • Cover the keyway on shutters and gates that face the yard, if the lock has a flap or a cap. Many do, and it is often left open.

When cleaning is not enough

If the key turns only with force, if it has started to bend, or if the lock has already been oiled for years, cleaning rarely brings it back. A new cylinder is quicker and cheaper than a key snapped off in a shutter at seven on a Monday morning. On a unit with many doors, it is a good moment to have the cylinders keyed alike, so one key opens them all.

If the works is going to stand empty for a while, the locks matter more than ever: see the note on locking up a yard that stands idle. The office safe often suffers from the same dust; small shops will find the note on where the day’s takings should spend the night useful too. For the locks themselves, there is a page on locksmith work for works, units and shops.
