# Door opening Novelda, for armoured doors, period doors and partida gates

A shut door can usually be opened without leaving a mark on it. How depends on the door: an armoured door in a 1970s block, the heavy timber door of a house in the centre, or the gate at the end of a track out in a partida. The gentlest way in is always tried first.

## The latch, the cylinder, and only then the drill

Whatever the door, the attempts go from the one that leaves no trace to the one that does.

- **The latch.** A door that is pulled shut but not locked with the key is held by the sloping latch alone. It can usually be eased back from outside, and the door opens as if nothing had happened.
- **The cylinder.** When the key has been turned, the lock is worked through the keyway. On older and plainer cylinders this often succeeds.
- **Drawing the cylinder out.** A security cylinder that resists is taken out and replaced on the spot. The door and the lock body are left as they are, and the new cylinder comes with its own keys.
- **Drilling.** The last resort, and only once you have said yes, knowing what it means for the lock and what it will cost.

## Four kinds of door, four ways in

The town has houses from the modernist years round 1900, a great many flats from the 1960s and 70s, and country houses scattered across the partidas. Each brings its own kind of door.

## Old timber doors in the centre

Novelda has been on the European Route of Modernism since 2007, and the streets round the Casa-Museo Modernista, built between 1900 and 1904, still have plenty of tall timber street doors. Many keep a mortice lock as old as the house, opened with a long key. These locks are simpler inside than they look, and they can usually be worked through the keyhole with no harm to the wood.

What is never done to such a door is cut into it. If the old lock is beyond saving, it is taken out whole and a suitable lock goes in its place. ## Showing the door is yours

Before any door is opened, the locksmith asks for something that ties you to the address: an identity document showing it, a rental contract, a bill, or a neighbour or landlord who knows you. It is asked of everyone, and it is what stops a locksmith being the easy way into somebody else’s house.

## About opening particular doors

### Can an armoured door be opened without ruining it?

Most of the time, yes, especially if it was only pulled shut and not locked with the key. When the bolts have been thrown, the cylinder is worked or, failing that, drawn out and replaced. The door, its frame and its bolts stay as they were.

### Our front door is over a hundred years old. Will the wood be marked?

Every effort goes into not marking it, because a period door is worth far more than its lock. Old mortice locks have simple mechanisms that can usually be worked through the keyhole. If anything has to be removed, it is the lock, never a panel of the door.

### The gate to our country house has a padlock on a chain. Can that be opened too?

Yes. A padlock is opened or, if it has to go, cut and replaced with one you choose, and gate locks fitted into the gate itself are handled like any other lock. Say which it is when you ring, so the right tools come.
